On Monday, I have one of my favourite shoots- portraits of the the graduating Year 5 students at my local P-10 school. It always makes me happy to see the students as they start to get quite excited about graduating from Primary School to the challenges of Middle School.
My challenge is to allow each student’s character and personality to shine through in the formal portrait. It is so important at their age to have a photograph of themselves that they are proud of, and I’m willing to take the time to get the best I can. Sometimes it means allowing a few silly ‘selfie’ photos to relax the students for the formal shot. Other students like to fix their hair first, and try out a few poses. I show each child the shots I have and retake if they don’t like any of them.
The school receives the images on USB, in the order selected by the school. The school is free to use the images as they wish. I also include a high resolution copy of each student’s portrait that can be printed up to 8×10.
The photos at my local school are are used as a backdrop as each student is presented to the audience and their achievements noted. Last year, the photos were very well received. One comment was,
“Those are not just photographs. You have captured the very essence of each child.”
I look forward to working with this year’s batch of graduates from Primary School.
