“The best part for me is the Survivors’ and Carers’ Walk. I get to walk along with other people who have done the same journey. Its different for everybody, but we walk the same path.”
More than 4000 people spent last weekend walking, running and dancing around the Athletics Track at AIS, Canberra. This was the Relay for Life.
Relay for Life is a fundraising event for the Cancer Council, but is really much more than that. People come together to ‘celebrate survivors of cancer, to remember who they have lost through a candlelight ceremony, and to fight back.” The sea of purple and yellow, as people circle the track together, is quite powerful and moving.

What brings me joy as a photographer, and gives purpose to my work, is when I have an opportunity to let everyday heroes see themselves as the beautiful souls they are, and I reserve parts of my calendar for pro bono work such as this. The opportunity to photograph the Survivors and Carers Walk and celebration lunch was an honour, and it really felt like I walked amongst heroes, each on their own journey.
This was my first Relay. I went as a photographer, but also it was part of my own journey. I lost my husband to cancer last year.
Here are the faces of some of those heroes.
